Paris in black and white: A photo series

April 19, 2020

It’s hard to resist the charms of Paris. The French capital is rich in history and offers something to see around every corner. From its iconic Hausmannian architecture and cultural landmarks to its charming restaurants, pâtisseries and people, Paris is full of character and exudes a sense of elegance and beauty. That’s what makes this city so special for photographers and tourists alike. And it’s that timeless beauty that makes it the perfect setting for black-and-white photography.

As you can see from my portfolio and Instagram feed, I'm a photographer that loves colour. There’s no better feeling than capturing the soft rays of golden light sweep over the colourful facades of a European village, or the shimmering panes of stained glass inside a centuries-old cathedral. But there’s a magic to black-and-white photography that fits Paris so well.

Stripping away the colours allows you to see a city in a completely different way. I love how it removes distractions like colour temperatures and ambient light sources, allowing the photographer to focus on the subject and its composition, relative to surrounding light and shadows.

Here I've posted some of my favourite black-and-white photos that I took from a trip to the city of light. Scroll through the gallery below and as always, feel free to contact me at hello@jamesbombales.com should you be interested in purchasing any high resolution prints.
